Which file format should I use?
For maximum compatibility:
If you want to be sure that every windows user can read your file, you should
use the ZIP format. But this format doesn't have a good compression ratio. You
can also use self-extracting 7-ZIP files.
NOTE: The 7-ZIP format is not currently supported in Alpha ZIP. Please check
back in a few weeks for an update that supports 7-ZIP.
For best compression:
If you want to have the best compression ratio you should create 7-ZIP files.
You will save lots of space and bandwidth.
But keep in mind that this is a new file format that not everyone can read.
Therefore, you should accompany your 7-ZIP files with the Alpha ZIP download
links to tell the recipients how they can open the files.
To exchange files with Unix, Linux and Macintosh users:
Non-Windows systems can handle .tar.gz files best. Never create Self-Extracting
files for exchange with non-Windows systems.
